Male Youth Classroom and Male Youth Services
A medicine wheel garden was created in 2011 with the assistance of all the students in the Male Youth Classroom. The care and maintenance of the garden is the responsibility of the boys.
The ultimate goal of horticulture therapy is to improve the physical and mental health of the individual. The benefits may be seen in four areas: intellectual, social, emotional and physical development. Many programs with at-risk youth find horticulture therapy as very effective in the areas described above.
Over time, we discover students learn to relate to one another in a more meaningful way as they work together towards a common goal. They learn to respect the rights of others, to be more cooperative, and to share responsibility. Male students also have an opportunity to develop leadership qualities. Horticulture therapy continues in the evenings and weekends with an on-site clinical therapist at Male Youth Services.
